Steve Johnson rode his Snap-On Tools Suzuki to victory at the inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina on Sunday. This makes two in a row for Johnson, after his win at the U.S. Nationals in Indy two weeks ago. Johnson qualified his Suzuki in the fifth spot for the Carolinas Nationals. He defeated the third fastest qualifier, Eddie Krawiec, in the final round when Krawiec jumped the start by -0.002 of a second.

Steve Johnson began the weekend eighth in Countdown to One championship points. His performance this weekend have bumped him up to second in the points standings. Matt Smith currently sits first in points, 34 points ahead of Johnson.

Notably, Andrew Hines gave a first round win to Wesley Wells by taking a red light. Joe De Santis also took a first round win after Craig Treble’s Suzuki refused to start. In the second round, Joe DeSantis’ Javelina H-D & Green H-D Suzuki GSXR was no match for Angelle Sampey’s Rush Racing Products Buell. His 7.186 E.T. at 189.31 MPH was easily beat by Sampey’s 7.082 E.T. at 186.64 MPH.

Steve Johnson beat Angie McBride’s Carolina Speed Buell in the first round. McBride ran a great heads-up race against Johnson, but her 7.083 second E.T. at 187.78 MPH with a 0.013 reaction time wasn’t enough against his 7.035 second E.T. at 192.08 MPH. Wesley Wells gave Johnson his next win after red lighting in the second round of eliminations. He had another break when Hector Arana to a red light in the semi-final round. Krawiec’s red light in the final round must have been a relief to Johnson, as Krawiec turned in a 6.974 E.T. that would’ve beat Johnson’s 7.029 E.T. if it weren’t for the foul.
