Chris Rivas Wins in Vegas, Matt Smith Holds Point Lead

Chris Rivas won the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class at AC Delco NHRA Las Vegas Nationals on Sunday. Rivas' Drag Specialties S&S Buell V-Twin ran a 7.052 E.T. at 185.79 MPH in the final round to defeat Eddie Krawiec and his Screamin' Eagle / Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson VROD. Rivas remains third in POWERade Championship points and is just 39 points behind points leader Matt Smith. The win by Rivas tightened the points race, reducing Smith's lead from 79 points. Krawiec's final round appearance also helped him edge closer to a possible championship. Krawiec remains second in the Countdown to One, but he reduced Smith's lead from 42 points to just 19 points with one race left in the season.

Angelle Sampey was the event's quickest qualifier when her Rush Racing Products Buell set a track elapsed time record of 6.993 seconds in qualifying on Friday. Angelle Sampey Quickest at Las Vegas Qualifying

Angelle Sampey set an NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle track E.T. record in qualifying on Friday at the AC Delco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at LVMS. Sampey ran her Rush Racing Products Buell to a 6.993 second elapsed time at 188.23 MPH to secure the top qualifying position for Sunday’s race. Sampey currently sits fourth in the NHRA POWERade Countdown to One championship points, 102 points behind the leader. Sampey will race Junior Pippin in the first round of Sunday’s elimination.

Eddie Krawiec and his Screamin' Eagle / Vance & Hines Harley Davidson VROD took the second qualifying spot with a 7.035 E.T. at 189.52 MPH. Krawiec is second in championship points and is 42 points behind points leader Matt Smith. Krawiec will face Shawn Gann and his X-Treme Rebellion / XXX Racing Fuel S&S-powered Buell in the first round on Sunday. Gann qualified fifteenth with a 7.169 E.T. at 182.26 MPH in his first outing with his new sponsors and bike.

Matt Smith Wins Lucas Oil Nationals

Matt Smith wins the Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Minnesota on a bye-run. Smith's NitroFish / Torco Buell broke the track record elapsed time that he set in qualifying (6.958 seconds) with his first round elimination run of 6.954 seconds at 190.14 MPH. His opponent in the round was Jim Underdahl, whose Fast Lane Sports / TVT 24-7 Engine Treatment Suzuki broke, giving Smith a bye-run and the win. David Hope made it to the semi-final round on his Vroom Racing Buell, only to be bested by Matt Smith's consistent high six-second runs.

Angelle Sampey had a great weekend, qualifying third and successively defeating Matt Guidera, Andrew Hines, and Chip Ellis to get to the final round. Unfortunately, Sampey's Rush Racing Products Buell would not start at the line. Matt Smith gave Sampey as much time she needed, until NHRA told Smith he had to go. Rather than idle his bike to the win, Smith ran his second bye-run at a scorching 6.973 second E.T. at 188.60 MPH, with a 0.057 second reaction time.

Matt Smith quickest in Qualifying at the Lucas Oil Nationals

Matt Smith set the quickest time in qualifying for the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota on Saturday. Smith's Nitro Fish Buell ran a 6.958 second E.T. at 189.55 MPH, giving the top spot while setting a track elapsed time record. Smith made consistently quick runs despite pain from kidney stones. He told Kevin McKenna of NHRA.com that he would be going to a hospital Saturday night, and not matter what happened, he would be racing on Sunday.

Chris Rivas' Drag Specialties / S&S / G2 Buell qualified second with a 6.977 second E.T. at 190.22 MPH in the final qualifying session. Angelle Sampey qualified third on the Rush Racing Products Buell with a 6.984 E.T. at 189.42 MPH. Smith, Rivas, and Sampey were the only riders able to hit six-second range qualifying runs.

Chip Ellis had the fastest Suzuki entry, qualifying seventh with 7.026 E.T. at 191.10 MPH on his Schumacher Electric Suzuki. Angie McBride, Joe DeSantis, and Buddy Robinson did not qualify (DNQ).

Chris Rivas wins Route 66 NHRA Nationals

Chris Rivas won his first Wally at the NHRA Powerade 11th annual Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Joliet, IL. (Chicago) on his S & S Drag Specialties Buell. Rivas (7.051 seconds, 185.43 MPH) defeated Craig Treble (7.134 seconds, 185.38 MPH) on his Team Tigue Suzuki in the final round of the rain delayed race.

Angelle Sampey had a perfect 0.000 reaction time during second round elimination, which was a byerun, because Shawn Gann unable to make the run after going off the end of the track in the prior round against Matt Smith. Gann reported that the high wind almost blew him off of his Suzuki.

Sampey, Bryce ready for reunion tour

Doc’s Harley-Davidson Rides with Sampey

Doc's Harley-Davidson, Missouri's oldest exclusive Harley-Davidson dealership, is partnering with three-time POWERade champ Angelle Sampey and Karl Klement Racing for the 2008 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle tour.
